The background of this North Irish Horseman is not known at present.

Robert J. Green enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 5 September 1914 (No.1111).

It is likely that he had prior military experience, for by the end of November he had been promoted to the rank of sergeant.

Green embarked for overseas with D Squadron in December 1914. The squadron camped at Cople, near Bedford, awaiting orders for France.

Early in the year, however, Green fell ill. He was discharged from the army on 30 March 1915 as being no longer physically fit for military service due to sickness (Paragraph 392 xvi, King's Regulations).
